Jan 7 Frigid walking tour

Once the sun came up this morning (not early), we decide to try out the Rick Steve's self-guided walking tour of St. Petersburg to get our bearings in the city. The tour starts at Palace Square in front of the Hermitage and walks up the Nevsky Prospekt.

Our hostel is very well located, only about a 15 minute walk from the Hermitage. The only problem is that it was -21 degrees, and we were all freezing cold by the time we made it to the start of the walking tour.

After a few pictures in the massive palace square, we hastily continued on the walking tour. A few blocks down Nevsky, my hands were getting to cold to take out the tour book to read the tour, so instead we ducked into a Russian doughnut shop.

I tried to order 4 doughnuts and 3 coffees, but ended up with 5 doughnuts and 2 coffees instead. We also realized that we need to get some ruble coins, since they couldn't make change for a 100 ruble note. The doughnuts are quite cheap at 12 rubles each, roughly 23 cents Canadian.

As we thawed in the doughnut shop, we decided to abandon the rest of the walking tour and just go check out the nearby Church on Spilled blood. It is quite an impressive building, very colourful and ornate.

Back at the hostel, we had some tea and lunch to warm up. Later in the afternoon, we took turns going out into the cold and staying in to play with Jasper. He seems to be warm enough bundled up in the carrier on Pat, but we don't want to push it. Jim and Dawne walked to the river to see the palaces lit up at night and Pat and I tried out a vegetarian restaurant recommended by the hostel. The mulled wine was delicious.
