Today we took a day trip across on the ferry to one of the Aran Islands, Inis Oirr. The boat ride was only about 20 minutes long, but the sea was pretty rough. Jasper and I both felt sea sick on the ride over.
It was a bit chilly and windy, so we sat in the indoor part of the ferry. The kids found a little seat for themselves on the window ledge.
The whole island of Inis Oirr is only 2km by 3km. There were lots of horse and tractor rides, or bike rentals, but we opted to walk.
There was another big beautiful beach right by the ferry pier.
The island is pretty barren and rocky. There are no trees, and every fence and old house is made out of stone. Apparently early settlers pulled seaweed up onto the rocks to try to make soil.
We walked to a shipwreck that is completely up on the rocks. It was wrecked off the coast in 1960, and was later washed up on shore.
We had a picnic and play at the park before catching our ferry back to Doolin.
After a failed nap, Pat and the kids went and got me a mothers day treat at the bakery, and we had another play at the playground by our hostel. We all have head colds, so we tried for an earlier bedtime tonight.
