Day 55: El Teide

The sun was out this morning, so we headed for the top of the El Teide volcano.
On the way up, we stopped at the National Park visitor's centre, where Jasper found a nice little volcanic rock perch to eat his morning snack.
Our first challenge was finding a parking spot anywhere near the bottom of the cable car. I guess everyone had the same idea we did, after two days of rain and cloud.
After parking and walking to the cable car station, our next challenge was that our timed tickets were for a ride two hours later.
We ate lunch, got a coffee, and enjoyed the scenery and the time passed pretty quickly. Luckily, the kids amuse themselves with water bottles and coffee cup kids as much as any toys.
Babies under two are not supposed to go on the cable car, but you can sign a waiver to allow them to go. I wasn't sure whether it was just for liability, or if it was a situation like when we were in New Zealand. There they told us not to go kayaking, but some people chose to anyways and wound up crashed on the rocks and needing to be rescued.
After the third person asked me "Are you SURE you want to bring your baby with you?", I decided to stay at the base with Ellis. We went for a little hike at the base of the cable car and enjoyed the views from there.
Jasper fell asleep almost as soon as they got to the top, and slept the whole time up there.
The landscape is quite Mars-like and very unique.
You need a special permit to be able to climb to the summit, so this was as close as they could get, but it was still a pretty incredible view.
It was a nice blue clear day, and any of the clouds in the sky were below the summit.
It was a long day, and we got a lot of sun, but it was definitely a unique Tenerife experience.
