Today we set off on our 9 week trip to Portugal and Spain. After weeks of packing and planning, we finally took off on Tuesday night. The first leg of the trip is 2 weeks on the island of Madeira with my parents and my grandparents.
The kids were surprisingly good at the airport, despite being up 2 hours past their bedtime and eating junk food.
The first flight was 5.5 hours overnight to the Azores. We were lucky to get an extra seat in our aisle, and did manage to get both kids to sleep at the same time for a couple hours. Jasper had a little meltdown, and we didn't sleep much, but all things considered, it was a pretty successful.
We had an hour layover in Azores, and Jasper napped the whole time on a couch in the children's area.
When we finally arrived in Madeira at lunch time, everyone was pretty zonked. We picked up our rental cars and drove right to our rental house.
The house is up on a hill on the outskirts of Funchal. It has amazing views of the sea and the town.
There's lots of space for everyone and a great terrace to hang out on. There are open staircases that are pretty treacherous for Ellis, but other than that it looks like a great place to spend a week.
I think the trip was hardest for Jasper. He is used to his bedtime routine and is usually a great sleeper. He was excited when we left, but by the time we arrived he was saying he wanted to go home. At dinner he asked to go visit Grandma and Grandpa's house.
It was hard to hear him be homesick, but I think once he gets some sleep, adjusts to the time change and we start doing some fun things, he'll feel better. (Although he'll still miss his family at home!)
