Pat and Jasper are both pretty into fish, so we decided to go check out the Ribeiro Frio trout farm that is up in the mountains. It was nothing like any fish farm I've ever seen before.
There were a series of stone pools that are filled with fresh water from the levadas (water channels for irrigation on the island). There were also about a dozen buses full of tourists there when we first arrived. There were 3 cruise ships in port in Funchal today.
There wasn't any information in English at the farm, but I think the trout are being raised for research purposes, not food.
A nice short hike along one of the levadas started right from the trout farm and ended at the Balcoes de Ribeiro Frio. Pat and Jasper had fun taking selfies and chatting along the trail.
You can see in the picture below that the lookout really is a balcony over the valley.
After a lunch stop at a picnic spot with yet another great view, we went to the beach for a change of scenery.
Madeira is a volcanic island and doesn't naturally have many sand beaches. The beach we went to in Machico has sand that has been imported from the Sahara
The kids had a great time splashing around in the water. Jasper even made a new little friend from Switzerland.
Back at the house, we spent some time enjoying the view from our balcony on our last night in this house. Tomorrow, onward to a farm stay in Ponta do Pargo in the west of the island.
