Today we went into downtown Funchal to explore the city. Our first stop was an old fort right on the sea.
The kids were champs today, napping while we were out and about, sitting through a restaurant lunch and grocery shopping on the way home.
Jasper enjoyed running around the roof of the fort, and looking out into the windows to the sea.
We're pretty luck to have the opportunity to travel with both my parents and grandparents for this first leg of the trip. Not many people can say they've gone on a four generation family vacation.
We went out for lunch at a cafe that was recommended to us by a lady in the airport in the Azores. Mom got Maderia meat on a stick, and the kids loved it. They also enjoyed the ham and melon plate.
After a bit more wandering around town, we caught the Teleferico to Monte.
There were great views of the city and we think we were able to see the house we're staying in from the cable car.
Ellis has no fear of heights at all, she spent most of the trip leaning over looking straight down.
Jasper preferred to watch the cars, trucks and buses navigate the switchbacks up the hills.
At the top of the cable car was the town of Monte.
Monte is famous for wicker basket rides down the hill. It is just like it sounds. Two men dressed in traditional clothes push you 2km down the streets. We opted not to pay 30 euros and end up stranded half way down, so we just watched.
Monte also had some beautiful gardens and a church where the last ruler of the Austro-Hungarian empire was buried after he died in exile on Madeira.
On the way home, we stopped at the grocery store, where Jasper enjoyed climbing in all of the kids ride-on toys.
He doesn't yet know that you can put coins in to make them move, and hopefully we can keep it that way for a while.
