Day 6: Into the clouds

The rain and fog came to Madeira today- the tail end of hurricane Ophelia. We could see the clouds in the distance, but we still decided to give our planned day a try.
Our first stop was the Cabo Girao cliffs glass floor lookout, which was completely enveloped in fog and clouds.
For some context, the picture below was taken on a clear day. The platform is 580 m above the sea, and apparently there are stunning cliff views in both directions. We'll have to take their word for it.

Given the weather, we decided to skip our planned beach picnic and instead head back into town.
We took the kids to the playground at Santa Catarina Park near the ferry terminal. The park also had beautiful gardens and a pond full of ducks and swans.
Once the rain reached Funchal, we ducked into a shopping mall to use the washrooms and escape the rain.
Of course, Jasper found a toy train and took teddy for a ride.
We took a break at a cafe for a treat and a coffee. Jasper had requested a Timbit on the drive over, so we found him something that resembled a donut at the cafe. I opted for a Paseis de Nata, a delicious (room temperature) custard tart.
Back at the house, we had a relaxing afternoon of naps, preparing dinner and watching the rain fall.

  2. I'm definitely being played by a two year old, at home I wouldn't give him a doughnut, but I really don't want him to be homesick!
