This morning everyone was still jet lagged and slept in quite a bit. We relaxed around the house for most of the morning before walking over to the botanical gardens.
There are lots of steep hills in Funchal, so it's good exercise pushing or carrying the kids around.
The botanical gardens had lots of interesting trees and plants and great views of the city.
The low railings made me a bit nervous, because there was a huge drop off into the valley.
Jasper liked the little lizards that scurried around on the rock walls, but he was a bit disappointed that the bird section of the garden was closed.
After lunch and nap, we went to a black rock beach in Funchal. Driving here is a bit crazy with the narrow streets and steep hills, but Pat and Grandad are doing a great job.
We climbed up a big volcanic rock hill by the beach, then Jasper and I went for a swim in the ocean.
Jasper had a great time getting his hands dirty in the black sand, then running into the waves to clean them off. I was glad to have packed his lifejacket, since the waves knocked him over a few times. He also lost one of his water shoes, but luckily we managed to save it.
It was great to see that Jasper cheered up a lot today after some good long sleeps and fun activities.
