We woke up to more rain and fog this morning so we decided to take it easy and wait for the weather to clear. Pat and Jasper went down the road to a bakery where Jasper picked out treats for each of us. This is his "can I share your treat?"face:
When the sun started to peak through the clouds we raced to the lighthouse in Ponta do Pargo to make it there 8 minutes before it closed for afternoon siesta. Jasper was abnormally excited about the lighthouse exhibition. This is his "check out that BIG light" face:
He was also very excited about the "bird flowers", which a quick google search reveals to be called Strelitzia.
We then drove down the coast to the Achadas da Cruz cable car. The cable car went straight down a cliff to a small flat piece of land on the coast. Since there is so little flat land for farming, the cable car system was put in just to transport crops and access the land (and now for tourists too). It was not recommended for those with a fear of heights. Here is Jasper pointing out the cable car route:
It's hard to get a feeling for how steep the cables were from photos. Jasper wasn't afraid- he looked out the whole way down.
Ellis wanted to get out and crawl around, but there was a small gap between the door and the floor, so I was not letter her out of the carrier!
Once at the bottom, we went for a short hike along the coast. It was hot and sunny when we started out,
but it started raining towards the end of the hike. It's amazing how much effort is needed to grow food in this small plot of land.
The hike wore Jasper right out. I'm not sure if that is a recommended sleeping position.
Back at the house, neither kid wanted to take an afternoon nap, so Grannie, Great Grannie and I took Ellis for a walk along a nearby levada to get her to fall asleep. Here are the before, during and after photos. Nap success was achieved!
Back at the house, we had to try out the pool that looked so inviting.
It was pretty cold, but Jasper enjoyed spalshing in the kiddie part while Ellis dipped her toes in.
We decided to go out for dinner at a place back near the lighthouse. The views were incredible, the food was good and the kids were relatively well behaved.
It was especially nice not to have to make dinner after such a long day!
