Today we took the Bahia de Cadiz catamaran to El Puerto de Santa Maria. El Puerto is a town on the opposite side of the bay to Cadiz, about a 30 min boat ride.
The catamaran is a part of the public transit system, so it is a cheap way to see the bay from the water.
With today being Sunday, and "winter", a lot of the attractions in El Puerto were closed. We went to the bull ring (the 3rd most important one in Spain, according to the guide book), but could only see it from outside.
The beach doesn't close, so we went there instead. There are several beaches in El Puerto, and we walked to the closest one, Playa de la Pontilla.
It was a beautiful Blue Flag beach with built up walking trails and playgrounds alongside.
It was low tide when we arrived, and there was at least 100 m of sand beach before you hit water.
I was a bit wary of the water quality, since there has been rain and flooding in the last couple days, and I've read that the sewer system isn't great here (it's hundreds of years old). The kids were happy to just play in the sand, find shells and wade into the water.
We grabbed lunch at a restaurant in a campground near the beach. Service in restaurants here is generally pretty slow, which is fine when you're enjoying a long leisurely meal with friends, but not so great when you're trying to get 2 cranky kids fed and ready for nap. Our lunch stretched out over two hours, so we had to get creative to keep everyone entertained.
Eventually we did get to eat, and the kids napped while we walked back to the catamaran. We have been doing lots of walking here in Spain- my watch says I've taken an average of 14000 steps in the past week!
